South Dynon Projects : Stage 1 & 2

The South Dynon Train Maintenance Facility (TMF) in Melbourne is undergoing significant upgrades to enhance its capacity and efficiency in servicing the regional train fleet, maintained by Alstom and operated by VLine. These upgrades are being executed through two separate projects, South Dynon Stage 1 and Stage 2, delivered by Laing O’Rourke as part of the South East Program Alliance (SEPA).

Stage 1

Completed in 2024, this phase focused on modernizing the existing infrastructure. Key deliverables included:

  • Reinstatement of five maintenance roads within the TMF, including all required external services, building services, and mechanical infrastructure.
  • Track modifications in the Northern Yard to improve train movements and operational efficiency.
  • CCTV and lighting upgrades across the yard.
  • Installation of a new 11 kV feed to the TMF to ensure sufficient energy supply for the new infrastructure and systems.
  • Installation of a new VicTrack optical fibre feed to the TMF building.

Stage 2

Commenced in 2024 and scheduled for completion by 2026, this phase aims to further expand the facility’s capabilities. Key projects include:

  • Train Bio-Wash Facility: Construction of a new three-car train bio-wash facility to clean trains more efficiently, allowing them to return to service sooner.
  • Underfloor Wheel Lathe: Construction of a new underfloor wheel lathe, the first of its kind to service V/Line trains in Melbourne, to maintain train wheels and extend their operational lifespan.
  • Reinstatement of Two Maintenance Roads and TMF Extension: Expansion of the maintenance facility over two roads to increase capacity for servicing trains.
  • Fuel Point Upgrade: Enhancements for higher efficiency.
  • Western Yard Track Works: Extensive track work in the Western Yard to improve train movements and operational efficiency.
  • New Wastewater Treatment System: Installation to support expanded operations.
  • Track Modifications in the Western Yard: Further improvements to train movements and operational efficiency.
  • CCTV and Lighting Upgrades: Across the yard.
  • Facility Improvements: Construction of new office and storage areas.

These comprehensive upgrades are designed to improve the efficiency and reliability of train maintenance, thereby enhancing service quality and reducing downtime across the rail network.

Kubri Project Management & Consulting’s Role

Stage 1:

Kubri Projects and Management Consulting (KPMC) has been involved in the South Dynon Stage 1 project since 2022, providing critical support for interface management between Stage 1 works and the West Gate Tunnel Project in the vicinity. In addition to interface management, KPMC assisted with:

  • The delivery of the new 11 kV power feed.
  • The installation of a new optical fibre feed for the TMF.
  • Assisting the Quality Manager and Engineering Team in tracking and reviewing all quality documentation project-wide.
  • Additional Kubri resources were mobilized as needed, including a Civil Project Engineer and an Electrical Senior Project Engineer, to assist with specific scope delivery during peak project activity.

Stage 2:

  • Program Management:
  • Delivery of External Hydraulic Services
  • Quality Management
  • The company also contributed project-wide by supporting the Quality Manager across all disciplines and scopes of work. For Stage 2, KPMC expanded its role to include planning support and delivery assistance for hydraulics, external services, and the broader civil scope of works, ensuring efficient progress and alignment with project goals.

This range highlights KPMC’s ability to support projects with both sustained, general resources and highly specialized expertise for defined periods.
